The State has released Sh.15 million in compensation to families of three Makueni County residents killed by wild animals.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources confirmed that the funds have been paid out to dependants and next of kin of the victims, according to a letter addressed to Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr. and dated August 31, 2017.

The letter indicates that the three were attacked and killed by hippos between 2014 and 2016.

13 other cases of deadly wildlife-human conflict, of which seven resulted from snakebites, have also been approved for payment by the national government, as per the written communication.

A second letter to the Senator, who has been instrumental in pushing for the compensation claims, affirmed that the Kenya Wildlife Service had moved in to avert elephant invasion in Mtito Andei area.

“Kenya Wildlife Service has confirmed that the elephants have been removed from the area. We also wish to inform you that a long-term solution for the problem including fencing is under consideration,” read the letter from the Principal Secretary’s office.
