Central Government will collaborate with Makueni County to speed up issuance of Title Deeds in a bid to settle the land ownership problems that Makueni County residents have faced over the years.
Makueni Governor prof Kivutha Kibwana and Lands’ Chief Administrative Secretary Gideon Mung’aro speaking during the County’s first Annual Land Conference at the ATC Kwa Kathoka in Makueni said the two levels of Government have decided to work together in order to deal the problems the people of Makueni who own land face and have tried for years with no avail to get documentation.
“We have people here who own big portions of land. They have owned these lands for years but have never acquired Land Titles” Kibwana said.
Kibwana added that his Government has recently launched a program that will assist the issuance of 53,000 titles to residents as part of the government’s plan to resolve the unresolved land problems in Makueni citing poverty as the main problem to accessing land documentations.
The governor also pointed out that some cartels are grabbing land in the county and appealed to The Ministry of Lands to get back a land grabbed from the Makindu stadium by a senior public officer.
“Somebody has grabbed Land in Makindu and we as county government have written to him but still he goes bragging that we are a small body and therefore we cannot do anything. The national government should intervene and help us reclaim this grabbed land.” he pleaded.
CAS Mung’aro ordered Land Ministry staff to work with the county ministry colleagues and ensure that land is reclaimed immediately.
“We will send out officers on Monday to look into the grabbing of the stadium. Meanwhile, we don’t tolerate such acts and no one is allowed to use their offices to execute grabbing of any public property.” he said.
Mung’aro further warned corrupt officers in the ministry will be dealt with ruthlessly if anyone complains they were demanding bribes to offer services to the public.
“We have been receiving complains about some of our officers. I want to summon all of them to Nairobi on Monday so that they can share with us what their issues are.” Mung’aro said.
The event was hosted by Makueni County Land with its ECM Joshua Wambua saying that a number of land clinics were held across Makueni concluding the entire conference.
Some of the settlement areas which were quoted to have major outstanding land issues are Ngiluni, Kiboko A, B and C, Ngai Ndethya, and Mbetwani.
Among speakers present in the event were land sector reform experts led by Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Land Alliance Odenda Lumumba.
