Flood Victims from Makueni have received aid from the UNICEF in partnership with the County Government of Makueni.
Kathonzweni Deputy County Commissioner John Mbugua who was present confirmed that 17 people lost their lives as a result of the heavy rains and thanked UNICEF for their contribution.
“We indeed want to appreciate UNICEF for partnering with the County Government of Makueni particularly in alleviating the suffering of those people who were affected by the adverse conditions that came as a result of the much rains that were experienced in the region. We therefore accept this gesture and we indeed say thank you, it’s going to go long way in alleviating the suffering that the people of Makueni have gone through” he said.
This comes a month after Makueni Governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana said that Makueni requires Sh1 billion to recover from the effects of floods during a meeting with Makueni leaders to strategize how to handle emergency responses.
According to the county report on the flooding menace, 26 dams were breached, tens of houses collapsed and several acres of crops destroyed as a result of the floods.
The report also indicates that Sh205 million is required to repair the water pans while Sh282 million is required to repair damaged roads.
The county government will also have to review its 2018-2019 annual budget in order to focus on addressing the damages and losses caused by the rains.
“We will, where possible, suspend some of the development projects earlier included in our 2018-2019 budget so as to enable us facilitate a recovery plan.”Kibwana said adding that the decision to divert the budget plan is painful but one that is a necessary sacrifice.
