Nairobi, November 15th, 2017: KITUI Governor Kaluki Ngilu today witnessed the signing off of theSh 36.9 billion Thwake Multipurpose Dam.
The dam was mooted during the tenure of Mrs Ngilu as Minister for Water and Irrigation and is a Vision 2030 Flagship Project to ensure water storage and spur social economic development and it is to be built at the confluence of Thwake and Athi River, touching Makueni, Kitui and Machakos Counties.
The signing took place at Maji House between Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Chinese Contractors-China Gezhouba Group Company representative, and was witnessed by Kamba leaders including Makueni Deputy Governor Ms Adelina Mwau, Mbooni MP Erastus Kivasu and Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo among others.
Mr Wamalwa said the proposed dam construction will take five years and will provide electric power, domestic water to 1.3 million people and irrigate approximately 40,000 hectares of land. “The dam will measure 77m high, 28km by length and will have 610 cubic volume of water “said Mr Wamalwa.
The leaders will hold a meeting on December 1 with Mr Wamalwa to formalise a working formula for implementation of this project.
