Only four families have shown up at Kilome Hospital to inquire about the whereabouts of their missing relatives following an accident that occurred on Tuesday at Emali, Nairobi-Mombasa road.
This is according to the red cross community which has put up a station at Kilome Hospital to assist the accident victims identify their loved ones who were involved in the accidents.
The badly burnt bodies were taken to Chiromo Mortuary in Nairobi where they would be identified by their relatives.
Confirming the incidence, Kilungu OCPD Paul Odede said 9 people died on the spot, 20 were seriously injured and 10 were missing saying that the missing might have been burnt beyond recognition.
Odede said burnt bodies have been taken to Chiromo Mortuary Nairobi awaiting to be identified by their relatives.
“Kenya Red Cross officials on site are advising those looking for their relatives to visit Chiromo Mortuary to identify the bodies,” he said.
According to the Kilungu police Boss,the bus which belongs to a Buscar company was over taking when it collided head-on with a truck bursting into flames.
The accident occurred shortly after 1 am at Civicon area on the Nairobi-Mombassa Highway.
Dr. Stanley Muia, an orthopedic specialist at Kilome Nursing Home, said that the hospital had received eight patients from the accident. Four were treated and discharged and four, with more serious injuries, are still admitted.
“All the patients still here are stable and will be treated or transferred shortly. None of the bodies from the accident were brought to our mortuary,” he said.
Dr. Muia recalls that there have been so many accidents between Sultan Hamud and the Loitoktok junction calling for action to save lives.
“In a week, we treat up to 20 accident victims. We have seen too many accidents on this road,” he said.
Traffic Boss Samuel Kimaru also visited the scene and said that the Bus driver was over speeding and carelessly overtaking.
Ms Nyabwana Abu Sadiki, a mother of three, who is nursing injuries on her head, neck, hands and chest, also said the bus driver caused the crash.
“We kept telling him to slow down but he would not listen. He said that he wanted to get us to Mombasa as fast as possible,” she spoke to journalists at her hospital bed.
The bus was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi.
