Flood victims in 30 homes which were affected by floods,that hit most parts of Makueni early this year, have received a Kshs 1.5m compensation from the national government.
Makueni County commissioner Mohamed Maalim while giving the cheques in his boardroom at Wote town has said that all families that were affected by the floods will be assisted.
He further said that this money is not for compensation rather its meant to comfort the families and the government will still compensate them for damages they incurred.
“We cannot compensate a lost life and thus this is just but one way the government can condole with you, as the money will help you to alleviate some of the challenges you are facing, following the calamity,” said Maalim.
Maalim advised the beneficiaries to use the money they received wisely by putting it into proper use to reduce their suffering.
“There are those of you who have lost a father, a mother or children and none of them can be compensated in monetary terms. I also appeal to you to plan well before using the money,” he pleaded.
According to the commissioner the floods also destroyed roads and pit latrines in schools and such schools need urgent attention. He called upon the elected leaders, stakeholders and well-wishers to come out and help solve the problems students and local residents are facing after the damage.
In conclusion Maalim acknowledged three youths Kisengela Salama Village of Kibwezi East Sub-County for assisting those stranded as a result of the said flood waters.
“I thank the three youths for their efforts to evacuate 12 people who were on a tank for several hours in Salama village. This is the kind of Kenyan spirit we need to carry the burdens of others,” said Mohammed.
Makueni was one of the counties affected by the raging floods that hit the area in March and April 2018.
The total sum estimated to repair roads, earth pans and dams is Shs.2b.
